Ranting #3

Saw this in the papers today...

"THREE students from Hwa Chong Institution collapsed while taking part in a school cross-country run and had to be taken to hospital.

One of them, a 14-year-old in Secondary 2, fainted 45 minutes after the run started last Friday and was warded in the National University Hospital's intensive care unit (ICU) for heat stroke...

The other two, a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old boy, both in their A-level year, were warded for heat exhaustion. They were discharged two days later, on Sunday.

They were among 4,500 secondary school and junior college students who took part in the annual event, which this year required the students to run 3.6km at Turf City, the old Bukit Timah race course, last Friday afternoon. The run was held there as the place could accommodate the large number of youngsters participating.

This is the first time all the students from the institute's six levels, comprising the former The Chinese High and Hwa Chong Junior College, took part in the run...

The highest temperature that afternoon was 34 degrees Celsius... the school took 'adequate precautions' before and during the event. 'We had two ambulances on standby and water stations along the route. All the students were also told before the run that they should stop if they feel tired.'......"

This reminds me of the Road Run during JC days where everyone in school has got to run... even though big fat lazy me hates to run at that time but what can i do when i don't have a MC? well... i managed to skip the first Road Run in my life in year one during my first 3 mths stint in NJ... cos they actually scheduled it after I got my O levels results... so knowing that I cannot get into NJ anymore... I just simply slept at home while the others run in the hot sun...
However... things were not so rosy in year 2 in JJ... think they were clever to schedule it before the release of the results and furthermore... since I'm year 2 already and was the PE representative of the class... i had to go...
can't even remember whether did i actually run thru'out the whole thingy but at least i remembered the day to be much more cooling... even though we ran beside the PIE and into the neighbourhood estate...

back to the case... those kids have to run in a 34 degree centrigrade weather to turf city from their school... quite a feat I should say... as one fine day I was walking to turf city from The Tea Party @ Sixth Ave Centre with pie... I was already flustered at the hot weather and was simply complaining... that one fine day was one of those days where the skies refuses to shed a single tear for the poor meltable me standing under the sun's bright radiation...
anyway... they are all poor kids... maybe the school should scrap the Road Run thingy for the good for all students... NOT one school but ALL schools so that things like that won't happen anymore... but then I thought these type of thing (heat exhaustion) happen quite frequently? okay... not heat stroke though... cos last time when me in sjab doing service at sports day... i saw so many cases of heat exhaustion... yet none of them made it to the papers... haiz...

************************************

I have been busy these few days trying to help a colleague edit his thesis... have been upset recently cos my dear pie actually scolded me for the past 2 days... hopefully everything's fine now... was considering should I stay in hostel next sem? cos I really cannot tahan the 2 rascals in my house... esp the attention seeking EnEn... and by the time term starts... both will start running after each other and scream my house down... how to stay at home lidat? haiz... still considering...
I'm hungry now... shall look for something to eat... realised Nissin cup noodles has got 6.5g of saturated fats per serving... real sinful... considering the fact that my daily intake should only be 15g of sat. fats... haiz... shall look for something else to eat then... haiz...
