Pain

I'm tortured by this pain that is developing within me...

this pain made me learn that i'm still alive... that i'm still on middle earth... not in heaven or hell... but this pain made me feel like hell...
maybe this pain is meant to make me stronger... make me strong enough to face other forms of pain and torture... what doesn't kill you will just make you stronger...

i wish i could just drop onto the floor and roll in pain with tears in my eyes... no doubt it will pain those who loved me... but this pain is just too hard to bear for me...
i miss those times when i did just that and my mom seem to understand my pain and suffering and brought me things that could help relieve the pain a little... little tots help... and i'm simply grateful to her...

now i have to face the pain all by myself... alone...

p.s. painkillers dun kill the pain... they just make the pain bearable...

today's pay day... but seems like pay from IA cannot sufficiently let me go on a holiday to my designated country even after working for 4 months... but wait... which country do i want to go? hmmm... maybe Europe? US? China? New Zealand? regina's going aust this june... citing she had saved enuff for a trip there that costs 1.5k... maybe i shld start saving for my graduation trip next year to China?

okie... think i'll be satisfied by a backpacking trip from Malaysia all the way thru Thailand then to Myanmar or Cambodia... okie... maybe end at Thailand... but then... that is provided i find some crazy people to go with me... cos the friends i know are either those who only like shopping overseas or too nua to go backpacking... or even too busy to even spare a day to go out with me... next problem i have will be to convince my parents to let me go on a dangerous trip like this... and me coming up with the money that i need to spend... and me learning more about the country before setting off... and all this effectively sum up to forgoing the trip for something else... haiz...

think i shld start saving before thinking about all the other problems... maybe save for my diving 1st... the others shall come later... money... where art thou?

Freshman... Sophomore... Junior... Senior... CAP vs GPA...

was reading "The Rule of Four" and realised the word sophomore came up very often... being a person with a very limited vocab... i dun really understand what the word mean... as such... i did a search in Wikipedia...

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

In the USA, where undergraduate degree courses commonly last four years, the following terms are used:

A freshman (or, frosh) is a first-year student in college or university, or, chiefly in the United States, in high school. (This word came from England, but is now used far more frequently in America.)

A sophomore is a second-year student. Etymologically, the word means 'wise fool'; consequently sophomoric means "pretentious, bombastic, inflated in style or manner; immature, crude, superficial" (according to the Oxford English Dictionary). Coming from the Greek sophos, meaning wise, and moros meaning moronic.

A junior is a student in the third year of high school or college.

A senior is a student in the fourth and last year at a high school, college, or university.

so i am now a junior... will be a senior soon... but how abt those people with just 3 years in uni? maybe they can skip the sophomore stage... how abt those with more than 4 years like archi and medicine?

in NUS, people usually compare their grades in terms of CAP which stands for Cumulative Average Point... in US, the equivalent will be GPA or Grade Point Average...
and just a matter of curiosity (and lots of it as a result of boredom in office)... i did a search on Wikipedia on GPA too...

Grade point average
Grade point average (GPA) is a number that represents the average of a student's grades during his or her time at an institution. Usually it is weighted by number of credits given for the course.
Most
high schools and nearly all colleges in the United States use a "four-point" system, where numerical values are applied to grades as follows:
A = 4
B = 3
C = 2
D = 1
F = 0
FF/G (if given) = -1

This allows grades to be easily averaged. Additionally, many schools add .3 for a "+" grade and subtract .3 for a "−" grade. Thus, a B+ yields a 3.3 whereas an A− yields a 3.7. A+'s, if given, are usually assigned a value of 4.0 (equivalent to an A) due to the common assumption that a 4.00 is the best possible grade-point average, although 4.3 is awarded at some institutions. In some places, .33 instead of .3 is added for a "+" grade and subtracted for a "−" grade.

Some high schools, to bolster their students' chances in college admissions, will give higher numerical grades for difficult courses, often referred to as a weighted GPA. For example, a common conversion system used in honors and advanced placement courses is:
A = 5
B = 4
C = 3
D = 1
F = 0

so next time if ur counterpart in US asks abt ur GPA and u only know your CAP, u can always do a conversion with the above info... think SMU uses the GPA too...

according to Academic Ranking of World Universities 2004, Harvard is the best university in the world... and my institution, NUS is in the 101-152 range... but i tot NUS was one of the top 20 universities? read this... and this... maybe these ranking uses different indicators?

Interesting article that i saw from another blog...

The Difference Between Malaysians and Singaporeans
By Eddie G.

Excerpt:

AT A BUFFET
Malaysian: Eats until he throws up
Singaporean: Eats until he throws up, and then eats some more

LAW & ORDER
Malaysian: Knows his laws, disobeys them and that's fine
Singaporean: Knows his laws, disobeys them and gets fined

ECONOMY
Malaysian: Trade Union owned by rich, pretentious bastards who don't know shit about the struggles of the working class
Singaporean: Trade Union owned by the government

LEADERSHIP
Malaysian: Former Prime Minister retires and goes off to enjoy life while calling the shots from behind the scene
Singaporean: Former Prime Minister retires... oh wait, no he doesn't.

INFRASTRUCTURE
Malaysian: Builds Twin Towers to symbolize what Malaysia is all about
Singaporean: Builds Twin Metal-Spiked Balls for the same purpose

haha... quite true hor... read an article today from TODAY on the usage of plastic bags by S'poreans... seems like S'poreans cannot live without plastic bags and cannot be bothered to recycle/reuse them... haiz... that's why everytime during coastal cleanup or some other cleanup sessions... the majority of waste collected will be plastic bags... plastic bags are bad for marine life leh...

another article on weekend today tells us of the reduction in oil supplies... in the article they were saying that plastic products may be getting more and more expensive... maybe Singapore Govt should take a strong stand on banning reducing the use of plastic bags to be more environmental-friendly save money...

however, think many people will be sad if plastic bags are gone from their life... i might be one of them though... *smile sheepishly*

watched Sahara yesterday... think it's not bad but i think reading the book is much better... at least i think Giordino portrayed by Steve Zahn is somewhat different from the Giordino i read from the book... anyway... clive cussler's books are the best (at least to me) when it comes to adventure... me still waiting for the paperback version of black wind though...

hmmm... me have been growing fatter lately... due to lack of exercise... thanx to lele clinging onto me whenever i say i wanna go jog... and my old ailment of backache back to haunt me when i want to practise pilates... haiz...

wanted to share an article of how a type of ant capture its prey... but then worried abt the copyright infringements leh... anyway its from Nature... the latest issue(vol434) with the title Arboreal ants build traps to capture prey (pg 973)... available from NUS eJournal... so NUS students can go find lah... if not u can always request it from me...

ya... think now is exam period for my friends out there... all the best for your exams and hope all of u get As k... add oil hor... its going to be over soon... especially for some who will graduate after this exam...

the past weekend

my weekend started on thursday nite cos i took leave on friday... cos april 15 is me and mudpie's 2nd anniversary...

thursday nite was spent singing at kbox with mudpie... spent quite a considerable amt as a result of a silly mistake... but nvm... as long as we enjoyed it then okie... though we have learnt from that mistake by burning a hole in our pockets... was pretty memorable as it was the 1st time we went to ktv together... though i think my singing sux big time...

friday... me woke up early even though dunnid to go work... went west coast with mudpie wanting to go there fly kite together... but maybe it's been a super long time since i last went there... realised the shop selling kites and offering bicycle rental service is closed... haiz... and there's a whole bunch of kids from the kindergarten... so we walked all the way to NUS to take bus somewhere...

in the end went to his place cos he's too tired... having slept at 3a.m the previous nite... so while he slept (and snoring away...) me read newspapers and played freecell on his laptop...
went Bishan J8 to shop a bit then went home... mudpie came over to play with lele and we even brought him out... and my poor lele got bitten by lotsa bugs... insect bites here and there and really swollen... poor lele...

ya... forgot to mention that there's this cat who 'loves' mudpie so much that it leapt onto his lap at the bus stop near my place... maybe it's because of the food that we were carrying then... but managed to catch that moment on camera...

haha... look at mudpie's expression
poor mudpie has to sit there while i take the photo

cute little kitty
little kitty left some fur on mudpie... and mudpie's nose allergic to it... oops...

cute little kitty
kitty still there...

and that's how we spent our 2nd anniversary... well... nothing dramatic or romantic though... haiz... at least better than last year when he went to rawa with his buddies and left me in s'pore (cos i have exams at that period of time)...

saturday was a day spent meeting up lian juan, jinjing and regina... as usual i was late... but i was still the earliest... haiz... why does this always happen to me??? went seah street deli for lunch at 1330h... haiz... very 'early' lunch... haiz... went there becos' of their cake which has 7 layers of chocolate... but apparently the portion of their food was so big that everyone of us (maybe except regina) was complaining that our hands are tired of cutting and our mouths are tired of chewing... really full (or i shld say bloated) after lunching there... sat there for nearly 2 hours chatting about our IA and gossiping... have been quite sometime since we lasted got together...

lian juan with the shrawl covering her 福气...

jinjing with the dreamy eyes

me and regina...

here's some fotos that we took... even though the food might look little but it's actually super duper a lot...

me with my grilled chicken breast... din know it comes with the bread...

regina and her food... forgot the actual name but remember is some turkey thingy...

lian juan with her lamb chop...

jinjing with her 'statue of liberty'...

the caesar salad... served with the super sour blue cheese...

the menu... which we think should have more photos so that we know what we are ordering...

the ketchup, mustard (which regina commented it being very mustard...), black pepper (my fav), salt and sugar... the silver box behind holds the serviettes

after lunch we walked over to the esplanade... of course we went shopping here and there... and i think the walls along the walkways to esplanade are beautifully decorated... din capture that on camera as i'm too lazy to take photos... haha... that's just me... maybe next time bah...
lj and jj went there to buy tix for amber... some chinese play... then it's photo taking time...

din manage to take nice group fotos as people there just cannot understand english... 1st was this japanese tourist whom we can't communicate with... then was the chinese tourist who cannot focus resulting in the blur images... then was the local malay punk who din press the capture button long enuff to take the photo... that was even though we told him many times to press the button for a longer time... haiz... maybe it's not their fault but our lousy canon cameras... haiz... think we have to make do with fotos taken in pairs or threes... haiz...

the blurry group photo with the very fat me...

the very bohemian duo who looked so stunning when i saw them at the mrt station...

jinjing and me beside the fullerton hotel... camera effects to make me appear slimmer and jinjing not as slim...

nite time was pretty lousy for me as me quarrelled with mudpie again... just becos i'm unhappy with some issues... cried again... haiz... in the eyes of his friends and family... i'm always the demanding and lousy gf... and even my friends think he's all wonderful... is it becos i chose not to tell people about my problems and keep them to myself that resulted in me being the big bad person that i'm perceived to be? but it's just not me to tell people of my problems... haiz...

sunday... woke up an hour late for tuition... was supposed to have the tuition at 10 but i woke up at 10... luckily she was understanding and agreed to have it at 11... haiz... went tuition with swollen eyes... wasn't the 1st time that i went with swollen eyes... and luckily she asked me the on the topic of reaction kinetics which i had took in uni... or else i will be too stoned to answer her...

bought my favourite tau sa pau for lunch as i have to rush to another tuition... on the way mudpie tried to cheer me up... wrote me touching msgs... but maybe once the heart is numbed with pain... even the most touching sentence cannot move the heart a little...

i always think tuition at Adelynn's is enjoyable... at least i dun feel stupid (stumped by the questions she ask) and she was more like a friend to me... at least that session cheered me up a little... at least i'm happier to the extent to msg mudpie... and back to normal by joking with mudpie...

nite time... nothing much except really missed miki ojisan's cream puff... ate my chubby hubby instead and felt real sinful... haiz... which resulted in me growing fatter and fatter...

p.s.: do click on the photos to save them k... lazy to send the photos to ur mailbox... kekeke...

before i update on the past week... i must rant about the fact that i'm getting FATTER... arghz... think i'm really becoming more and more like a dinosaur... getting fatter day by day... must be due to the lack of jogging/stretching/pilates/swimming/brisk walking/skipping or simply just the lack of exercise these few weeks (or should i say months...) and the fact that i've been overeating/eating bigger portions at irregular times lately... not to forget my ben and jerry's chubby hubby and miki ojisan's cream puff...

have to start on my diet and exercise regime again to lose all those excess flabs before term starts... and reach my goal of losing another 2kg by june... okie... tonight will be jogging and pilates... and lunch will be a quarter portion of rice... =)

China vs Japan
Disclaimer: this is only my personal point of view and should not be taken as any political argument. articles are from TodayOnline, 13 and 14 April 2005.

there's this unhappiness between China and Japan regarding the latter's approval in the whitewashing of Japan's atrocities in the new Jap's high school history syllabus... this has also led to unhappiness in South Korea...

seriously... i think Japan has been trying to 'beautify' their military history ever since after WWII... well... shouldn't comment too much cos i think anyone who knows about Japan's involvement in WWII should know... if not one can always read about it in history books (not written by the Japanese of course...) i recommend the book yamato dynasty by sterling seagrave... quite boring at times... but it's history...

anyway... think Japan's economy might be affected by the strain in relationship with China...

we can only sit and watch this 'match' between this 2 countries... but this is what caught my eye today...

how many of u actually noticed these 'cows' that were grazing on grasslands all over s'pore? quite difficult not to notice because of their bright (and weird) colors... went to toa payoh on saturday on bus 157 and saw at least 3 areas with these 'cows'... apparently it's part of a teaser compaign... maybe they should put chickens since this year is the year of the rooster... kekeke... if they wanna put pigs during the year of the boar which is 2 years from now... i'll be very happy to see so many of 'me' around... hahaha... but i'll be 24 then... sad... getting older le...

but me prefer ostriches...

cute cute ostrich

so cute dun u think so? haha... maybe i'm weird to like ostriches as lele doesn't share the same thought...

btw... my beloved lele is sick (again)... thanx to his mom for not giving him enough water to drink and not feeding him well... poor lele...

also... me effectively jogged yesterday... finally jogged after so many weeks of slacking and lousy weather... (which i always say whenever i wanna jog... it will rain but when i have appointments or dates where i'll be too busy to jog... the weather will be fine... haiz...) kekeke... will make it a point to jog every 2 days as there's this group of caucasians jogging around my estate at around 1830... haha... can take the chance to ogle at them have greater motivation to jog...

and dear all... if u haven seen me for a long time and wanna comment that i have slimmed down... please do not say "你瘦很多leh" cos i will definitely refute u with "难道我以前很胖meh?"... though it's nice to hear people commenting that I've slimmed down but i certainly do not hope people to comment that i was fat (though it's a fact) in the past... thanx for ur cooperation...

blogger ate my post yesterday... or i should say 2 days ago... that is on friday itself... wanted to blog abt my office environment and and comment on the tense atmosphere there... but... too bad... i'm too lazy to retype the post again...

went shopping a bit on friday and realised levi's square cut jeans are out... finally... been waiting for it for while... but it's at $139.50... maybe that will be the luxury item for next month... or maybe i shld wait til the great s'pore sale... too financially challenged to buy...

msg seirye and asked her to bring me to batam to shop and go look look see see... haha... maybe my dear jc friends wanna tag along too?

nite time accompany mudpie to collect CPU for his biz partner... waiting for cab to ferry all the things to his place but the taxi queue at SLS was simply too long... so being the super bad us... went to OG there to hail a cab... and guess what... we got a london cab... it's the 1st time in my life that i got on a london cab... not to mention it being a street hire... was so excited and happy... the cab is spacious... enough to fit a group of six... and the uncle was super friendly and professional... chatted with us along the way and also told us that's only 45 london cabs in s'pore... his name is anthony ng... super nice limousine driver specially selected to drive the london cab.... even took his name card (yes... they do have namecards...) so anyone wanna book a london cab can msg me for his number... but check out the charges 1st...

today... or i shld say yesterday (sat that is...) was a day spent lazing at home... too lazy to go shop or anything... even forgo the chance to go out with lele... haha... super duper lazy me... but finallie woke up by tax cos he need me to do something for him... haiz...

anyway... went watch a play with mudpie... shakespeare's twelfth night at the dbs art centre... was an hour early so went walk ard the area... realised there's lotsa cafes and restaurants around the area and we walked til very tired... went to the rivercafe for a drink and to rest our tired legs... fries cost 5 bucks... super ex...

play was quite interesting even though we cannot catch the accent of some of the performers and i literally dun understand the 1st 5 minutes of what they are trying to say... got this 'fool' who's acted by an irish performer... super handsome and has the robbie william's looks and attitude... has a great voice too...

next week will be me and mudpie's 2nd anniversary... looking forward to it... and also the sound of music musical at the end of the month... hopely seirye will want to bring me to batam somewhere within this mth too...

Trip back to school

took leave today to go back to school... wanted to collect my SMART card and also the centennial mug, a gift of a commemorative mug as part of the University’s centennial celebrations.... so went school even though the weather today is superb for lazing at home...

had the chicken cutlet from engin canteen that i've been dreaming of ever since i started IA... so happy... even though that meant i'll be overeating again... but once a sem should be quite okay...

went to attend the CEP lecture (my first lecture this sem!) with tax cos i got nothing better to do (good to revise my Yr 1 modules too)... the lecturer was the same...though they have another lecturer teaching them too... (heard that he's super handsome but super dunno-how-to-teach...) but venue changed from the sucky LT5 (which is no longer sucky after renovations) to the leaky and stinky LT7A... leaky as the compressors for the air-con doesn't seem to be working and water droplets were formed and thus dripped onto the unfortunate seat in the 2nd last row... stinky as there's always this stench when u stepped into the LT...

went to co-op to buy chocolates then to collect the mug... wanted to go holland v to buy something for my colleague but ran into Johann, my EV senior... told me about a seminar (though i would say it's more a tutorial...) on Ecology... so went to listen since i've got nothing but time today...

the seminar was on the tropical rainforest in s'pore... pretty interesting to me... lecturer (or speaker) was from Biological Science (botany dept)... pretty interesting talk he gave... very informative yet worrying cos he said that the bt timah nature reserve would be gone in another 100 yrs (though not in my lifetime but still as worrying...) and which some dept actually suggested buying the forest from Johore since s'pore has nothing but money... haha... pretty true...

the part i like most was on the part of strangling figs... the flowers usually germinate on tree trunks... and another thing on figs was about their fruits... the female wasp which feed on the fruit actually lay eggs within the fruit itself... and so when the eggs hatch then they will have to try to fly out... and guess what... only the female has wings and eyes but not the male... the male will have to remain in the fruit (which serves as the lodging and provide the source of food) and be a SEX SLAVE to just fertilise the eggs laid by the female... haha... so interesting... if only we human beings are like that...

just for your info (so can skip if u want...) the speaker (or actually A/Prof Benito C. Tan) said that trees only have an average lifespan of 50 years and leaves only have about 1 week to 2 years... human beings have longer life than them... but some trees can live up to 5000 yrs old...

very interesting module according to Johann... cos A/Prof Obbard actually organise lotsa talks like this and also field trips for this module... but the sad thing is that my batch (and most likely subsequent batches...) will not take this module as it is removed from our syllabus... haiz... it's EV1404... ecology... maybe my whole class should write a petition to ask for the inclusion of this module...

went holland v and bought a new cashcard cos the new SMART card do not have cashcard functions... (unlike the old card... and i have effectively lost the word environmental on my new card...) waited 30 minutes for bus 61 and as everyone knows... when that happens 2 same numbered bus will arrive at the same time... haiz....

the usually shy socially inactive me actually met a number of friends in engin today even though my classmates are mostly doing IA or are in different faculty... quite happy to see familar faces... but i do miss the days when me and regina was walking around the school rushing to go for lectures or tutorials...

The past week

let me think... all that i remember of last week was that i spent a great deal of money on transport and a lot of other useless stuff... haiz... really financially challenged...

also... for the 1st time in my life... i stepped into sengkang... spent 2 hours shopping at compass point but realised there's nothing much... went there to collect 'blish' for lele... which is his towel... think u must see to understand why... haiz... but the only consolation for me on that day was the mushroom cheesecake that mudpie bought for me as dinner... it can look real small but it was so big actually that me and mudpie almost puked while trying to finish it... reminds me so much of the Jap's 电视冠军(大胃王)series... haiz...

this is the mushroom cheesecake from miki ojisan... supposed to be very nice... but am too full to appreciate...

saturday was spent lazing at home... was so bored that i took out a pair of white shoes and painted it blue... haha... so happy... at least i have a new pair of blue shoes... wanted to create one with stars but think i failed miserably... haiz...

my new pair of blue shoes...

with my name at the back... haha...

saturday nite was spent on celebrating peifang's birthday... supposed to meet them at 6pm but i was late for 10 minutes but guess what... i'm still the earliest... haiz... they are really late queens... anyway... was a good thing that i was early as i spotted my buddy's ex-gf holding hands with a guy... which the very kpo me wanted to take a good look so i can report to my buddy... and unexpectedly... that guy was my buddy... walked up to them... my big bad buddy never tell me they are back together... haiz... but later at nite then he told me the whole incident and why they are back together... but dear all... it wasn't my buddy's fault... it was that ger who wanted to jump ship...
after dinner i went to meet mudpie at city hall... had a big blister on the back of my foot due to my dear pair of pink shoes... super painful til today... have to lift my leg when i bathe to prevent the water from reaching the wound and making me scream in pain... haiz... took this photo on the bus on the way back home...

nice? the watch higher up was the V-day present from mudpie and the watch at the bottom was my gift to him on his b'day...

sunday was spent tuitioning and shopping at ikea with parents... dinner was at tiong bahru market which i think i've overeaten again... haiz... have been overeating for the past few days... must be getting fatter and fatter already... haiz...

currently, in the background my dearest lele kept repeating 'big kor kor... big kor kor...' haiz... just becos i showed him pictures of mudpie and him together... then he kept saying kor kor... even pointed to the phone and said kor kor... tried calling mudpie to get him to talk to lele but mudpie's too busy already... haiz... have to suffer another nite of korkorring by lele... haiz... so mudpie... please come and play with lele k... and save me from the suffering of him chanting 'kor kor'...
