Planet Earth is dying
read the Straits Times today and saw this article with a big 'ball' in the middle... pains me to see this warning... but i believe this is inevitable... considering the damage done by fellow human beings... haiz... human just take our mother Earth for granted... exploiting her and according to a UN-sponsored study (that costs a hefty US$24 millions...), 60% of the world's grasslands, forests, farmlands, rivers and lakes had been depleted...
think in another 50 years or so... our dear Earth will not be able to take it anymore and thus, die... haiz... but come to think of it... she's already protesting... with all the earthquakes... changes in weather due to El Nino... increase in disease outbreaks... depletion of freshwater and fish and forest reserves... but i think that's just the consequences as a result of all the exploitation... chinese call it 自食其果...
my love for the environment (and animals) led me to study environmental engineering... though the course never really go into detail of how to save our beloved Earth... and thinking abt that... how many people in my course really love the environment... haiz... which reminds me what regina told me abt our class as every year during the annual coastal cleanup... our course mates will always be absent... and it's always the batch missing out of the 4 batches of the course... well... me and regina still makes an effort to go... but that is provided we do not have lessons or tests on that day... but in general... the coastal cleanup thingy always gets a poor response from all the people taking env engrg... maybe they dun wish to get their hands dirty but just wish to pay a little sum and see other do the dirty work...
this reminds me of Singaporeans... at least Singaporeans are the type to donate the most amt of money but not take part in community or volunteer work... even the community service done by students are just to take a metal tin and solicit donations for a flagday... that's why every saturday in 2005 has a flagday that's ongoing... sometimes even on wednesday itself...
but then... everyone (including me) is used to all the high tech stuff and the hygiene and convenience of technology which is bad to the environment... just like me typing this ranting out and wasting energy, which is driven by all the fuels and thus depleting them... haiz... so quite contradictory... i love the environment but i love the convenience of technology too... haiz...
maybe sometimes we should just 回归大自然... but with such a huge population on Earth... i doubt it will be easy...

talking about taking things for granted... think it's human nature to take things for granted when they are free, be it monetary or otherwise... in relationships... sometimes a partner might take another for granted too...
but i think this is bad... so maybe people who is reading this now should use a minute to think of people or things that u have taken for granted before... like ur parents? ur partner? ur friends? or the environment, like the sun, moon, stars and the wonderful things Earth has provided us?
do something if u think u need to when there's still time... cos life's short... u never know whether u will get to see them tomorrow...
